Ed Ruscha (1937 -) began creating prints and drawings composed of "a single word" in the late 1950s. This later developed into Ruscha's signature "Word Paintings." After moving to Los Angeles in 1956, he was captivated by the "new, fluid, and free" landscape of Southern California. Using images from advertising media often seen in the city, he created works (prints, drawings, and paintings) where only words floated against a background with a unique atmosphere. The number of these works has reached hundreds, and he has also produced photographs, films, and self-published books in parallel.

This book contains works of "575 words" compiled by Ruscha himself. In true Ruscha style, who considers the medium of the book itself as a work of art, this compact-sized book has a substantial presence with 580 pages. The images depicted within are like a novel without a plot, and the array of words that emerge from the surreal background images, devoid of narrative, are like a beautiful and mysterious "single film" that captures various mental landscapes deep within memory.
