The Essays of Francis Bacon were first printed in the year 1597, and included only ten essays. Over the years, Bacon revised and amended his Essays and, in 1625, he published them in their final form as, “The Essayes or Counsels Civill and Morall, of Francis Lord Verulam, Viscount St. Alban. Newly written.” His last revision comprised 58 essays.The Essays were written and published in English and, unlike many of his other works, were intended for a broad audience. Despite being written four centuries ago, his Essays remain relevant today, due to the timelessness of his insights and the wide range of topics he addressed.Facsimile editions of the 1625 printing are available, but, if you are unfamiliar with 17th century typeset and archaic spelling conventions, you might find it difficult to read. In this Modern English Edition of Bacon’s Essays, I have tried to maintain the look and feel of the original work. I have included facsimile images of the original headers, artistic first letters, and marginal outlines, and I have set the book in an easy to read font. I have changed the irregular and unusual spelling of words to match modern spelling conventions, but the original punctuation marks have been left as-is, and all capitalized and italicized words have been left as they are found in the 1625 edition, as Bacon intended.It is my sincere hope that this Modern English Edition of Francis Bacon’s Essays will bring the joy of his work to new audiences.
